The Art and Design Department is pleased to present this exhibition, highlighting the work of students in the MSED in Art Education program, as they work towards their professional teacher certification for New York State in visual arts for grades pk-12. The title, "Inward, Onward, Upward," refers to the personal inner reflections and explorations of the artists, the forward moving development of their creative visions, the rise of depth in their artistic skills in both medium and material, and greater sophistication of conceptual ideation and content in their work.

This exhibition is the first ever of its’ kind and will feature artwork and research posters from art education students in our MSED program and the Creative Studies program, and students from the Multi-disciplinary graduate program. Students worked in a variety of media and explored content, context, process and form. Art Education candidates stretched their thinking to find deeper connections between their studio work and classroom pedagogy, creating creative LEAPS towards greater depths in their ideas and technical facilities within their art-making and teaching practices. This exhibition proudly shows the results of their artistic growth during their graduate school experiences and individual creative journeys.

Buffalo State has been dedicated to preparing teachers for 150 years. The art education program at Buffalo State is one of the oldest in the country; the first courses in art education were offered in 1871.
We are pleased to be able to exhibit the work of artists who take on the enormous task of educating our youth - while still creating artwork of their own to share. These artists/educators are some of our invaluable community partners. They provide essential real-world learning opportunities to our pre-service art teachers: allowing them into their schools and classrooms, acting as mentors, and working with us to ensure that the torch of visual arts continues to be passed on to new generations. This exhibition allows our college community to enjoy their artwork, but it is also meant as a gesture of gratitude for all the great work they do with their own visual art students and our Buffalo State art education students.

As a twist in our traditional faculty exhibition, this year we are highlighting the diverse processes of our Art & Design faculty. In observing finished artwork, the viewer usually only sees an end result. The artist's creative process - the thought, labor and love that went into creating such a piece – is not always transparent. Through this unique exhibition in the Czurles-Nelson Gallery, we lean into the gallery as a teaching space and show our students and visitors how our diverse creative processes are anything but linear. A work and concept does not spring into being but is the end result of a labor of love and passion for what we do and who we are as artists.
Displayed here are concepts or samples that are perhaps temporarily abandoned and picked up again, tools, material explorations, or finished work that is surrounded by all the samples and drawings that lead up to its creation. We hope students and visitors will enjoy this rare glimpse into the unique creative processes of our faculty. The exhibition demonstrates how every work is the culmination of scholarly research, extended periods of brainstorming, and trial and error - all done in the spare time between duties of teaching and service.

We are tied into a chronological braid rooted to the past, a braid, a legacy, a culture that is woven through the hands of action and artifact. This performance is a happening that brings presence to the interplay of this phenomenon, creating a contemporary conversation of Black experience. From spontaneous moments of dance, spoken word, music, and mark making, artists will create a dialogue that spawns a tangible object, lived in the present, and recorded for posterity as a visual artifact.
